This month, Newry Junior Chamber has placed Christmas trees in two key shopping locations around the Newry’s city centre, and one tree in the Credit Union Warrenpoint.
The trees are decorated with gift cards with the first name and age of hundreds of children who are in need of ‘Secret Santas’ this Christmas. Shoppers are invited to choose a card and buy a gift for the child, returning it to the collection point where the tree is located.
Locations for the trees are The Quays Shopping Centre, Buttercrane Shopping Centre, Newry and the Credit Union, Warrenpoint. Trees will be placed at these locations from Monday 30th November and gifts can be left up until Tuesday 22nd December.
Charities benefiting from the appeal include St Vincent de Paul, Women’s Aid, Newry & Mourne Foster Carers Support Group and Social Services as well as a number of smaller local charities.
Newry Junior Chamber President Nicola Whyte explains: “We work closely with a number of local charities to identify children of all ages for whom Christmas may not be that special due to a number of reasons. The response to our last four Secret Santa Appeals has been truly amazing and we’re hopeful that the people of Newry and the surrounding area will once again demonstrate their generosity and kind-heartedness.”
Gifts should be returned to the location where you took the card from and the final date to donate your gifts is Tuesday 22nd December 2009. Newry Junior Chamber elves will liaise with the local charities in ensuring all gifts are collected and distributed in time to give children a special gift at Christmas.
